An Overview of the Hong Kong Secondary Education System in
Hong Kong and Transition to Post-Secondary Study of local students

Mr. Joseph Tsang
Chairperson of Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters

Each year there are around 70000 local secondary 6 students sitting for HKDSE exam in Hong Kong. HKDSE results are used for university application for tertiary institutions local and overseas alike. As the competition for local university places is very keen, many Hong Kong students seek overseas studies opportunities.

In recent years, various Japan-based organizations in Hong Kong have been working very hard to promote university education in Japan among Hong Kong students. Yet, as many of them are of native Japanese who were born and raised in Japan, they find it difficult to give advice on further study in Japan because they do not have the background knowledge regarding the education system in Hong Kong. On the other hand, the huge differences between the education systems of Hong Kong and Japan also have created big challenges for Hong Kong students to seek university education opportunities in Japan.

This seminar aims at enhancing the understanding of Japanese teachers and related personnel about the education system in Hong Kong, multiple pathways that local students have for further studies, and what difficulties local students face when exploring the overseas studies opportunities in Japan. It is hoped that through exchange of information between the speaker and the participants, both parties can gain a clearer picture of the education systems of the two places and in turn seek ways to bridge the gaps in between.
